This class is an excellent introduction to the tools, materials and techniques used for classical sculpture. Students will use water based clay to sculpt a portrait from a live model over the course of 10 three hour sessions. I carefully guide students through the process of sculpting, instilling in them the technical approach and discipline necessary to capture the essence of the model. I stress the fundamentals of correct tool usage, clay application and measuring techniques required for all forms of sculpture, however I also allow the student enough freedom to introduce their own styles and personalities into their work. I recommend students new to classical sculpting complete two portrait classes before moving onto figure sculpting. The classical techniques taught in this class will provide an excellent foundation for the student to move on to creating any style of sculpture whether it be traditional or modern.

Over the course of 10 weeks students will learn the classical techniques necessary to successfully sculpt the human figure. Working with a nude model students will sculpt 1/3 life-size figure sculptures in water-based clay. Advanced sculpting techniques will be covered in this class so it is recommended that students have taken my portrait sculpting class or have prior sculpting experience. This class is intended to improve a sculptors skill level and an emphasis is placed on learning instead of producing a finished sculpture.
